Junk Culture

year: 2013 / at: GSD / course: Thesis Prep / advisor: Inge Rocker /

Junk Culture is my thesis prep book looking at the history of IKEA and speculating on the future of micromanufacturing + additional after-Post-Fordist models. I was initially drawn to IKEA through fascination with their breathtaking influence on physical culture in the industrialized world, and how the objects they produce, their aesthetic and social ideologies, and the sheer scale of their operation seemed to escape critical discussion or curiosity.

Among chapters on IKEA's history, internal power structure, and supply chain, are around 5,000 products I scraped from the IKEA's US website.
